Obituary Bismarck Tribune (Nov 23, 2003)
Rose Koffler, 91, Mandan, passed away of age related illness, Nov. 23, 2003, at a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil and rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.
Rose Erhardt was born July 18, 1912, in the Center, N.D., area the daughter of Kasper O. and Anna (Doll) Erhardt. Rose married John B. Koffler on Oct. 9, 1936. The two, both born of agrarian roots, due to limited opportunities on their respective parents' homesteads, became urban, learned this new life and did well.
Her husband, John B., became a barber and Rose became the barber's wife. Together, after a short initial period in Mandan, they bought a barber shop in Glen Ullin in 1940, from Bill Pfau who for health reasons was willing to sell. (For an "in her own words narrative" of their early married life see the centennial book "Glen Ullin Yesteryears 1883-1983" page 300.)
A "stay at home" mom, she was the primary person to raise four children in the Glen Ullin area. She was a life long member of the Catholic church and a 30-year member of the Christian Mothers group. She worked for two years at the Marion Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin in the 1970's.
At John B's "winding down" of his barber business in Glen Ullin, they built a new house in Mandan and returned there to semi-retire and to finally, fully but reluctantly, leave the barber business. Their lives for over 50 years really revolved around this work.
She, in her early years, enjoyed cooking -- especially making the house smell good every week with freshly basked bread, rolls, etc. -- perhaps in the tradition of her mother. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, music and like to sketch horses. She was respectful, polite, well-organized person and dedicated mother whose spirit will be greatly missed.
Rose is survived by two daughters, Alice Carson, Fargo, and Connie Schiff, Mandan; two sons, Robert Koffler, Vancouver, Wash., and John T. Koffler, West Fargo; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Connie, Mandan, and Max, Center; two sisters, Pauline Esselman, Oshkosh, Wis., and Odea Light, Denver; and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters; four brothers; and numerous other relatives. She was the first child in her birth family to be born in America. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
