JOSEPH AND CATHERINE (HOPFAUF) ERHARDT New Salem 1883-2008; Page 188
Joseph Erhardt was born in the Ukraine region of Russia on January 14, 1909 to Kasper and Anna (Doll) Erhardt. Traveling by ship from the Russian port of Odessa on the Black Sea, in 1911 Joseph and his family left Russia, hoping for a better life in the United States. They were one of many families of German descent that immigrated from Russia during this time period. She Joseph's mother was quite seasick during much of the long ocean voyage, so young Joseph had the run his ship. The ship's crew apparently enjoyed the young lad and begin to teaching Joseph to smoke during the voyage. Joseph's family, which grew to 13 brothers and sisters, settled near the community of Rosebud, which was located about 13 miles Northeast of New Salem and South of Center.
Catherine was born on March 18, 1915 to Stanislaus and Emilia (Leingang) Hopfauf, and was raised on the family Homestead located Northeast of Flasher. Catherine's father had immigrated to the United States from Karlsruhe, Russia in 1903 and her mother was born at St. Anthony, North Dakota. The second of 16 children, much of Catherine's early life was spent babysitting younger brothers and sisters and helping with farm chores on the family farm as well those of neighbors and relatives.
Joe and Catherine met at a St. Vincent's church social and dance in the summer of 1934 and were married on October 16, 1934 at a country church in Fallon, North Dakota. They settled on a farm 10 miles Northeast of New Salem where they lived until 1970 when they retired and moved to Mandan. They raised four children: Gladys (born in 1935, married to Leo Leingang, lives in Mandan), Rosalee (born in 1938, married to Kenneth Mosbrucker, lives in Mandan), Marcus (born in 1942, married to Joey Silbernagel, lives on the family farm Northeast of New Salem), and Marvin (born in 1947, married to Carol Weiss, lives in Bismarck).
Joe died on October 7, 1990 and Catherine died on March 29, 2005.
