Edwin J. Whitman (Died February 16, 2008)
Edwin J. Whitman, age 82, of St. Mary‚s Home, East, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Saint Vincent
He was born in Erie on April 19, 1925, a son of the late Edwin and Marie Grumblatt Whitman.
Edwin graduated from East High School and then the Pennsylvania School of Banking at Penn State University. He was also a graduate of the New Jersey Bankers Association Data Processing School at Princeton University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
He was in the US Maine Corps as a Platoon Sergeant from 1943 to 1946 serving 2 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater of Operations including Iwo Jima.
He held various positions in the Banking industry including Branch Manager, Coordinator of Branches, Cashier and Senior Operations Officer, Vice President, Facilities Management and Vice President of Corporate Planning. He retired in 1989 as a Vice President at PNC Bank.
Since the age of 49, he entered and completed 47 marathon runs of 26.2 miles each, 3 of which were in the fabled Boston Marathon and 11 50-mile ultra-marathons. He holds various age group records at all distances from 10,000 meters to the marathon. At one time, only 8 runners in the world surpassed his time in the 50-mile event. Overall, he had run over 30,000 miles. He was the author of the book, "Mirror of the Marathon".
In 1977, he was the recipient of the John C. Metcalf Award from the American Red Cross and in 1977 and 1978, he received the "Erie County Runner of the Year" award.
From 1958-1983, he was an instructor at the American Institute of Banking, Erie Chapter, and he was also an advisor for the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Program in Williamsport for many summers.
He was a former Director of the Erie Chapter of the American Heart Association, the Downtown YMCA, the Erie Chamber of Commerce Tourist and Convention Bureau, the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority and Personnel Consulting Services, Inc. He was a former Chairman of the Erie Chapter of the American National Red Cross and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association Management and Personnel Committee. He was a former President of the Erie Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and the Credit Managers Association of Erie. He was also active in Boys‚ Baseball of Erie.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann Benz Whitman in 2007 and 2 brothers, Robert and Donald Whitman.
He is survived by 6 daughters: Carol Schloss and her husband Peter of British Columbia, Canada, Janet Walters of Erie, Linda Jivoff and her husband Thomas of Canastota, NY, Susan Forrest and her husband Kim of Corry, PA., Alice Carlson and her husband Martin of Mechanicsburg, PA, Greta Laughlin and her husband James of Liverpool, NY, and a son, Christian Whitman and his wife Debra of Erie. 14 grandchildren: Russell Schloss, Leah Walters, Paul-Thomas Jivoff, Bryan and Karen Forrest, Elizabeth and Lily Carlson, Jordan and Elijah Laughlin, Lamont Gray-Whitman and Robert, Megan, Katelyn and Zachary Whitman, a brother, James Whitman and his wife Veronica of Erie and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call on Wednesday at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc. 2502 Sassafras St. Erie, Pa. 16502 from 2-4 and 7-9 and also on Thursday morning at St. Mary‚s Home, East from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
