Richard E. "Dick" Sorg
GRATIOT: Richard E. "Dick" Sorg, 60 of Gratiot, died Tuesday, July 03, 2012 at his residence. He was born Saturday, October 20, 1951 in Zanesville, the son of Earl L. Sorg and Gertrude (Zwick) Sorg. He married Rebecca M. "Becky" (Lynn) Sorg on Saturday, October 20, 1973.
Dick retired from The Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District in July 2011 following 40 years of service. He was owner of Sorg's Yule Time Pines. Dick was a very active and dedicated member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church serving in the choir, as a Eucharistic minister and past co-chair of the St. Thomas Festival Committee. He was currently serving as President of The Y-Bridge Longbeards, the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Muskingum County Farm Bureau Board of Trustees, the State Board of Directors for the National Wild Turkey Federation; Ohio Forestry Association Advisory Board Member and State Committee Co-chair for the Ohio Tree Farm Program. Dick received the Zane State 2012 Alumnus of The Year Award and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Cardinal Award. Dick was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Dick is survived by his wife: Becky Sorg of the home; one son: Jonathan & Laura Sorg of Marysville; two grandsons: Andrew Earl Sorg and Jacob Nicholas Sorg; six sisters: Shirley & Terry Cooperider of Newark, Patty Rubeck of Newark, Delores & Jerry Gibson of Cambridge, Sandy & Dan Backus of Zanesville, Michelle & Todd Rock of Zanesville and Becky & Rod Smith of Zanesville; three sisters-in-law: Debbie & Steve Awalt of Zanesville, Cindy & Ed Heil of Adamsville and Theresa & Dave Brown of Fredericktown; three brothers-in-law: Bill & Dolly Lynn of Nashport, Dave & Linda Lynn of Zanesville and Rick & Wanda Lynn of Sunbury; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by one brother-in-law: Frank Rubeck.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday, July 8, 2012 at The Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, where a Christian Vigil will be held at 7:45 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Monday, July 9, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Fr. Jordan Turano, O.P. as celebrant. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park.
