Gretchen Rau, a New Orleans-born set decorator who won an Oscar last
month for her work on "Memoirs of a Geisha," died Wednesday of a brain
tumor at her Northport, N.Y., home. She was 66.
Ms. Rau, who graduated from Louise S. McGehee School in 1957, was too
ill to accept the statuette in person, said her son, George Pattison,
who attended the Academy Awards ceremony and gave the Oscar to her at
her Long Island home two days later. She had been nominated for an
Academy Award two years ago for "The Last Samurai."
She had no formal training in her craft, her son said, but after moving
to New York City in 1966, she learned about the business from friends
who were involved in movie and television productions. Ms. Rau's first
professional work, in 1977, was on commercials and in television shows,
he said.
Four years later, she got her first major movie job on Louis Malle's
"Atlantic City." During the next quarter-century, Ms. Rau was the set
decorator for more than 30 films, including "Crocodile Dundee," "A
River Runs Through It," "Six Degrees of Separation," "Nobody's Fool,"
"The Crucible," "The Human Stain" and "The Life Aquatic With Steve
Zissou."
Survivors include three sons, George P. Pattison II, A. Taylor Pattison
III and Jean-Paul Menard, all of Northport; two daughters, Anne M.
Pattison of London and Stephanie C. Pattison of West Palm Beach, Fla.;
a brother, Forrest Rau; a sister, Roli R. Deeves; and four
grandchildren.
The funeral will be private.
