Funeral services for Arlen Stiegelmeier, age 78, of Gettysburg will be at 10 AM, Friday, January 10, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. Burial will be at the Gettysburg Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 1-3 PM Thursday at the funeral home and starting at 6 PM at the church with a prayer service at 7 PM. Arlen passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.
Arlen Kenneth Stiegelmeier was born on May 23, 1935 to David and Emma (Junker) Stiegelmeier. He grew up on a farm near Britton, SD. After obtaining his schooling in Britton, he was employed in the oil fields of Wyoming.
In 1957 at the age of 22, Arlen enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany. Upon completion of his enlistment he returned to the family farm in 1959.
In 1964, Arlen was united in marriage to Sandra Lamberton at Langford, SD. They made their home in Pierre, SD where Arlen had started a career with the South Dakota Department of Transportation and son Kenneth was born. In 1966 Arlen and Sandra moved to Gettysburg where Arlen continued his career with SDDOT and in 1974 daughter Bonnie joined their family. Arlen retired in 1997 after a 33 year career with the SDDOT.
Arlen was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He enjoyed playing cards and shooting pool at Gordon's or the Gettysburg Pool Hall. Arlen enjoyed the outdoors, spending time hunting and fishing.
In 2006 Arlen suffered a debilitating stroke. Though his body wouldn't cooperate, his spirit never wavered. He especially enjoyed visits from his granddaughter, Alexis Kellogg. He resided at the Gettysburg Manor until his passing.
Arlen is survived by his son, Kenneth; daughter, Bonnie (Paul) Kellogg; granddaughter, Alexis Kellogg; and Sandra Steigelmeier all of Gettysburg, SD; brother, Sidney (Sharon) Stiegelmeier of Britton, SD, sisters, Reeva Cunningham of Reno, NV; LaVetta Pearson of Edina, MN.
Arlen was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rodney and Neal; sisters, Normah Kayl and Virginia DeYoung; and granddaughter Ashley Anne Kellogg.
