Bio: Born in Oil City, PA, Bob joined the US Army Signal Corps at 16, beginning his service in Hawaii. He was wounded in Korea at Chosin Reservoir. He recieved training as a pilot (fixed-wing) and paratroop, and competed on the All-Army Rifle Team, which he eventually coached. He served in Vietnam, installing communications and training personnel. Bob retired from the army to work in industrial sales, eventually becoming VP, Varco-Pruden Metal Bldgs. After a second retirement, he consulted on several continents in plant construction in metal bldg. fabrication.Bob loved to hunt and fish as a young man, and later played a lot of golf and tennis.He is survived by his wife and 8 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. ----courtesy Memphis Commercial Appeal, 5Jan2014.

GEORGE ROBERT McSPARREN, 83, died in Collierville, TN on Monday, December 30, 2013 after a short illness. A native of Oil City, PA, Mr. McSparren joined the Army Signal Corps at 16 and spent his early years gathering electronic intelligence in Hawaii. He was then sent to Korea where he was wounded in the retreat from Chosin Reservoir. During his Army career, he qualified as a pilot and a paratrooper, then served on and coached the All-Army Rifle Team before being sent to Viet Nam to install communications and train personnel. He retired from the military to pursue a career in business and was vice president of manufacturing for Varco-Pruden Metal Buildings when he retired a second time. then he opened a consulting firm, designed and supervised construction of metal building fabrication plants in India, China, Spain, Brazil and Egypt as well as in a number of locations in the United States. He was an avid hunter and fisherman in his early years, but found that he preferred tennis and golf. He held a commercial pilot's license, and loved to sail both locally and in races on Lake Michigan. He is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 47 years, and eight children: Karen Haunani Demetrio, Kevin McSparren, Kimberly Patterson, Kendall McSparren, Kelly Nelson, Kyle Burkhart, Karol Cartwright, and Megan McSparren, as well as by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and a Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 10 both at Collierville Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent by mail to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
