Harold Opp, 87, of Rapid City, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, at a local nursing home.
Harold was born on Jan. 30, 1921, in Long Lake, S.D., to Christian and Lydia (Lautt) Opp. He received his education in McPherson County.
Harold served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. He married his childhood sweetheart, Edna Spitzer, after he was honorably discharged from the military. They then farmed on the Opp family farm for 27 years.
In 1972, they moved to Rapid City, where Harold worked for the Rapid City School System. He retired in 1985 and stayed busy painting houses, mowing lawns and creating woodworking projects.
Harold was a member of South Canyon Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 1273 and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, who loved him dearly for 62 years, Edna Opp, Rapid City; one son, Ronald (Trella) Opp, International Falls, Minn.; two daughters, Jane (Duane) Ritter, Fort Collins, Colo., and Joyce (Kent) Hanson, Loveland, Colo.; one brother, Wilbert (LouElla) Opp, Ashley, N.D.; six grandchildren: Craig (Karen) Opp, Brian (Cindy) Opp, Ryan (Maggie) Vaughn, Shannon (Lance) Lathrop, Mandy Ritter and Jared Ritter; and five great-grandchildren: Morgan, Gage, Briggs, Haellie and Rissa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters: Anna Fink, Caroline Opp, Ella Loebs, Leona Troutman; two brothers, Arthur Opp and Robert Opp; and nephew, Delbert Opp.
Services will be held on Monday, July 14 at South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Pastor Chris Baesler officiating.
Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
