Frances M. Knoll was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Mandan, to Nicholas and Mary (Bender) Stumpf. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and Mandan High School, graduating in 1938. After completing her education, Frances was employed as a secretary at Cloverdale Creamery and later worked for the federal government in Williston. In 1940, she returned to Mandan to raise her younger brother and sister, after her Mother died unexpectedly. She worked at First National Bank in Mandan during this period of time.
On Oct. 5, 1942, she married her childhood sweetheart, Clement (Dusty) Knoll, who was on furlough from the U.S. Army. After having four children and being a homemaker, she returned to work in 1964, first serving as a secretary and then as an officer at Norwest Bank in Mandan, retiring in 1982.
Frances was a member of St. Joseph's Circle, Catholic order of Foresters and Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed baking (especially cookies), cooking and canning the bountiful harvest from her large garden each summer. Her passion in life was her four children and she looked forward to holidays, so she could cook for them. She loved music and playing the piano, reading extensively, playing cards and traveling with her husband, Dusty, in her younger years. She was also an avid Minnesota Twins baseball fan.
Frances is survived by three sons and one daughter, Leland Knoll, Phoenix, Lynn (Dal) Waldner, Lake Vermilion, Minn., Michael (Diane) Knoll, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mark (Barbara) Knoll, Richfield, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jodie (Stephen) Krueger, Christopher (Michelle) Knoll, Rikka Knoll and Dustin Knoll; and six great-grandchildren, Madisen Krueger, Josie Mae Krueger, Brennan Krueger, Alex Michael Knoll, Benjamin Knoll and Maxwell Knoll.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Clement Knoll; her parents; and four siblings, Frank Stumpf, William Stumpf, Robert Stumpf and Leona Haakenson.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kelvin Hsu, nephrologist and the entire KDU staff at St. Alexius for the excellent care and kindness that Frances received for the last 23 months. Also, we would like to thank St. Alexius home care who provided transportation for her dialysis treatments and other services and Mary Ellen Rebenitsch and Darlene Kuntz, for their vigilance, assistance, kindness and friendship.
