Birth: Feb. 6, 1920
Death: Dec. 27, 2008
Aimee Herzberg Kriger, beloved wife and mother, and devoted friend to those in need, died on December 27, 2008. The funeral will be at 3:00 PM Sunday, December 28 at Temple Israel Cemetery. She was 88. Aimee was born in Memphis, one of four children of the late Albert and Sadye Herzberg, and the granddaughter of Dora and Jacob Goldsmith, the founder of Goldsmith's Department Store, which is now Macy's. Aimee graduated from Central High School in Memphis, attended the University of Illinois, and graduated from the National College of Education at National-Louis University. After college, she worked as an elementary school teacher and later in life volunteered many hours as a remedial reading teacher for Memphis City Schools. While she was devoted to her family and friends, her passion in life was baking cookies, which she often donated to individuals and civic and charitable organizations for any occasion. Baking cookies and giving them away was Aimee's unique way of providing comfort and pleasure to others. She also served as a cookie chairman for the Girl Scouts of America. Aimee spent much of her life helping the needy. Her spontaneous acts of philanthropy included thousands of hours helping people in need find the basic necessities of life and she often facilitated their getting glasses from the Lions Club, food from the Memphis Food Bank, health care from the Church Health Center, and services from Social Security. Aimee was a frequent visitor to the Junior League Thrift Shop, where she purchased clothing for families in need. A favorite project of Aimee's was to help the Orange Mound Care Home obtain the proper certification to qualify for food from the Memphis Food Bank, and she donated new bedspreads for the Home's residents. Aimee was honored as one of President George H. W. Bush's Thousand Points of Light. She also was honored by the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis for her selfless volunteerism and community service. She believed that it was important to help connect people in need with resources that could improve their lives. Aimee was a member of various local organizations, including the Jewish Ladies Aid and Temple Israel. Aimee was preceded in death by Abe H. Kriger, her devoted husband of 57 years. She is survived by four daughters, Linda (Dr. David) Usdan of Memphis, Dr. Diane (Barry) Wilen of Hollywood, Fla., Laurie (Marvin) Blum of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Peggy (William) Adler of Memphis; seven grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Usdan, Jeffrey Wilen, Craig Wilen, Adam Blum, Elizabeth Blum, Andrew Adler, and Aimee Adler. She also leaves her brother, A. J. Herzberg of Memphis, 10 nephews and nieces, including Judy Epstein Royal of Memphis, who often joined Aimee in her charitable endeavors. The family requests that donations be sent to Temple Israel, the Church Health Center, MIFA, or the charity of the donor's choice. (Published in The Commercial Appeal on 12/28/2008)
