EARLIER:
The Gibson County Coroner's Office is investigating an incident at a Gibson County Coal LLC mine early Tuesday morning.
A county emergency dispatcher said emergency personnel were called out to the mine Tuesday morning, which is near Princeton, Ind. It is located at 6880 W. County Road 200 North. The dispatcher confirmed that the coroner was involved in the investigation, which means at least one death occurred. However, she did not have any other details about the investigation.
Sgt. Bruce Vanoven, a spokesman for the Gibson County Sheriff's Office, said he believed that one person was killed in the incident. Vanoven referred all other questions about the incident to Barrett Doyle, the county coroner. Doyle did not immediately return a call from the Courier & Press Tuesday morning.
Before Tuesday, there had not been any deaths at Hoosier coal mines in 2014. There was one death each in 2012 and 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The death in 2013 was at the Five Star Prosperity Mine in Petersburg, Ind., according to the Indiana Bureau of Mines.
According to that bureau's 2013 annual report, the Gibson County mine employs about 370 workers. It had 13 reported accidents in 2013, six of which caused employees to lose time, according to that report.
