FULTON, S.D. -- S.D. "Bud" Bender, 77, of rural Fulton died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at his residence under hospice care.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, S.D. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Fulton. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
S.D. "Bud" Bender, son of Theodore and Cecila (Brakke) Bender, was born on the family farm north of Fulton, on Oct. 6, 1929. He attended country school in the Fulton area. After his schooling, he helped on the family farm. He entered the U.S. Army on March 20, 1952 and served as a trainer.
He was united in marriage to Jean Learn on Jan. 17, 1953, at United Methodist Church in Fulton. He was honorably discharged on March 19, 1954, and returned to the Fulton area. The couple farmed in the Fulton area, where he raised livestock and feed cattle until his retirement in 2000.
He was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church, served on the Fulton Farmers Elevator board for 26 years and as treasurer of the Fairview Township board for 20 years. He also was an Epley Corn dealer. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, tinkering in the shop and going to horse shows. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, going to cattle auctions, feeding cattle, dancing and traveling.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jean of rural Fulton; four children and their spouses, Joan and Frank Urbanski of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Marilyn and Terry VenOsdel of Alexandria, S.D., Scott and Deb Bender of rural Fulton and Shari and Mark Hilton of Apopka, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Justin Urbanski of Watertown, S.D., Ashley and her husband, Jeff Bengtzen of McLean, Va., Melissa Cox of Mitchell, S.D., Paul VenOsdel of Fulton, Sara and her husband, Nick Kayser of Alexandria, S.D., Rebecca and her husband, Michael Arend of Alexandria, S.D., Neil Bender and his wife Emily of Fulton, Samantha and Spencer Hilton of Apopka, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren, Kelsey Bender, Jaden Urbanski, Leslie Cox, Caleb (Beatch) VenOsdel, Emma Urbanski, Matthew and Joshua Cox and Kennedy Bender; a brother and his wife, Melvin and Dorothy Bender of Mitchell, S.D.; three sisters, Carolyn Easton of Mitchell, S.D., Shirley and her husband, Gary Ritzman of Madison, S.D., and Judy and her
husband, Matt Dillon of Hollywood, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Learn of St. Paul, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jean; and three brothers-in-law, Wayne Easton, James Learn and Franklin Learn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mitchell Community Hospice Services or the Fulton Graceland Cemetery.
