Anthony "Tony" was the son of Frederick and Ottilia (Reifers) Holdener. He was married and had three sons and three daughters.
Tony had worked at Hunter Packing Company, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the St. Clair County Farm Service Ageny and was a dairy and grain farmer.
He was survived by his wife; children; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frederick Holdener, Jr; a sister, Pauline Brisk; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Rosella Anstedt; and four brothers-in-law, Delmar Thouvenot, Robert Schmiskie, William Roth, and Sylvester Hempe; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Hempe.

Anthony Theodore “Tony” Holdener Sr., 88, of Smithton, IL, born January 20, 1926, in East St. Louis, IL, died Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Oak Hill Nursing Home, Waterloo, IL, surrounded by his loving family.
Tony worked on the family farm growing up. He also worked at Hunter Packing Company, IDOT, and the St. Clair County Farm Service Agency, eventually becoming a prominent dairy and grain farmer.
Mr. Holdener was a dedicated member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Paderborn, IL, for 65 years, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and the church choir. He served as a parish trustee and a Eucharistic Minister at the church. Tony was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Millstadt Council #4741 and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Bishop Janssen Assembly, Belleville Council #1099. He was a member of the St. Clair County Farm Bureau, where he served as a delegate and board member, and was a member of Mid-America Dairy Association. He was a past member of the Floraville Community Grange.
He was a Millstadt Township trustee, a Millstadt Township precinct committeeman, and a member of the Millstadt Over-50’s Club. He belonged to the Belleville Sister Cities group, the Millstadt Sister Cities group, and served as a board member for Smithton Lumber Company.
Tony had a big heart and a strong work ethic. He loved to play cards, being part of the same card club for 60 years, and enjoyed taking care of over 70 rose bushes in his garden, bowling, dancing with his wife, Doris, playing slots at the casinos, driving his golf cart, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. His treasured moments were going to his grandchildren’s sporting, music, and dance events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Sr. and Ottilia, nee Reifers, Holdener; a brother, Frederick Holdener Jr.; a sister, Pauline Brisk; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Rosella Anstedt; four brothers-in-law, Delmar Thouvenot, Robert Schmiskie, William Roth, and Sylvester Hempe; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Hempe.
Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Doris, nee Roth, Holdener, whom he married on April 29, 1948, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Belleville, IL;
three sons, Anthony Jr. (Patricia) Holdener of Swansea, IL,
William Sr. (JoAnn) Holdener of Millstadt, IL,
and David Sr. (Janice) Holdener of Waterloo, IL;
three daughters, Ann (Frank) Hart,
Nancy (Louis) Dori,
and Marybeth (Brad Sr.) Smith, all of Smithton, IL;
14 grandchildren, Anthony III (Sarah) Holdener, Timothy Holdener,
William Jr. (Kayln) Holdener; Heather Holdener, Holly Holdener,
David Jr. (Kate) Holdener, Kyle (Jill) Holdener, Jessica (Robert) Wachtel,
Lauren (Coty) Stief, Frank (Kim) Hart,
Amanda Hart, Stephanie Hart,
Shannen Smith, and Bradley Smith Jr.;
nine great-grandchildren, Anthony IV, Katherine, Nicholas, and Maria Holdener,
Frank and Madison Hart,
and Claire, Henry, and Baby Wachtel;
two sisters, Catherine Thouvenot and Agnes Schmiskie;
two sisters-in-law, Lillian Holdener and Betty Torres;
and a brother-in-law, John Brisk Sr.
Tony also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Tony had a very kind heart and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Special thanks to Dawn Chamberlin, his hospice nurse, and to his caregivers and the staff of the Sycamore wing at Oak Hill Nursing Home.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, and from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL. A Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Chalice Services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:15 a.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Paderborn, IL, with Fr. James Voelker officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Paderborn, IL.
