Birth: Dec. 30, 1917 Hebron Morton County North Dakota, USA Death: Dec. 11, 1996 Faulkton Faulk County South Dakota, USA Eleanore Hartmann Vastag was born Dec. 30, 1917, the oldest of thirteen children of Henry and Mary (Bender) Hartmann. Christened Sophie Eleanore Elizabeth on February 10, 1918, at St. John Church, Hebron, her sponsors were her grandmothers Sophie Budde Hartmann and Elisabeth Riegert Bender. Known as Ella, she grew up on the family farm near Hebron, North Dakota and attended Hebron schools. She married Albert Vastag, Oc. 8, 1940 in Richardton, North Dakota. Following their marriage they first farmed north of Richardton, and then in 1947, they moved to Hebron. Here she raised her family of ten children where her days were filled with the many activities of everyday living. Tending a large garden was a special love. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Hebron. On Oct. 4, 1972, Albert and Ella divorced. As the children grew up and left home, she had time for crafts and sewing. Declining health led to moving first to a nursing home in Dickinson, North Dakota, and then to one at Faulkton, South Dakota. Both moves brought her close to the home of her youngest daughter Betty. Ella died on Dec. 11, 1996 in Faulkton. Funeral services were held Dec.14 at St. John United Church of Christ, Hebron, with Rev. Thomas A. Zuhlke officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons James Hauser, Jesse Duckwitz and Tyler Vastag; sons-in-law Dean Kessler and Dwight Bohrer and nephew Curt Hartmann. Burial was in the St. John Cemetery, Hebron. She was survived by five sons, Harold, Green Bay, WI, Raymond and Roger, Indianapolis, IN; Duane, Mandan, ND and John, Brandon, SD; five daughters, Ruth Sailer, Zap, ND, Dorothy Schneeweis, Hebron, ND, Darlene Murphy, Mesa, AZ, Karen Gunsch, Lander, WY and Betty Marthaller, Oakes, ND; two brothers, Ervin Hartmann, Sturgis, SD, and George, Hartmann, Sunnyvale, CA; five sisters, Hilda McCormick, Ortonville, MN, Anna Gietzen, Glen Ullin, Viola Nolet, DeKalb, IL, Martha Hartmann, Bismarck, and Frieda Kinnischtzke, Apple Valley, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Albert, Hank, Walter, and Frederick, and one sister, Esther Anderson. Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, was in charge of arrangements.
