'Bill' Uphoff, 89
William H. "Bill" Uphoff, 89, of Grand Island died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at Tiffany Square.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Curran will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with a Scripture rosary service at 7. Curran Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Uphoff was born on Dec. 19, 1915, at Oconto to Anthony and Mary (Zeller) Uphoff.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Uphoff, on July 24, 1999.
Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, William P. and Anne Uphoff of North Hills, Calif., Dennis C. and Polly Uphoff of Los Altos, Calif., and John F. and Janet Uphoff of Silver Springs, Md.; three brothers and a sister-in-law, James Uphoff of Beltsville, Md., George and Mary Ellen Uphoff of Bellevue and Ron Uphoff of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Kathy and Al Vidal of Burbank, Calif., and Mary Anne Buchanan of Valley.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Michael, Joseph, Jennifer, Jessica, Kimberly and Karen Uphoff.
Bill grew up and received his education in St. Paul, graduating from St. Paul High School in 1933. He moved to Omaha and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad on the electrical line. In 1939, he moved to Los Angeles.
Bill entered the U.S. Air Force on Oct. 12, 1942, serving during World War II.
He married Victoria Rose on Dec. 28, 1946, at Grand Island. He completed his active duty service in 1947, returning to San Francisco, where he attended Healds College of Engineering, receiving his bachelor of engineering degree in 1949. Bill continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve until his retirement on Dec. 19, 1975.
Bill was employed at Lockheed, retiring in 1979 as a senior design engineer after 30 years with the company. They moved to Grand Island in 1988. Mrs. Uphoff died on July 24, 1999.
Bill was an avid reader and enjoyed tending roses and growing grapes.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of Veterans of World War II.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Joseph, Robert, Donald and Charles Uphoff.
