Full Obituary: Memorial for Tad G. Mellecker Born in Mason City, IA on Jun. 8, 1934 Departed on Aug. 20, 2010 and resided in Des Moines, IA. Service: Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 Please click on the links above for locations, times, maps, and directions. Tad G. Mellecker, 76, passed away at his home on Friday morning, August 20, 2010. A memorial gathering for his family and friends will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, at Iles Funeral Homes – Dunn's Chapel. Following Tad's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Tad was born June 8, 1934, the son of Brooks Emerson and Nina (Greenlee) Mellecker in Mason City, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Following a family move, he graduated high school in 1952 in George, Iowa. He then furthered his education at the University of Iowa. While there, he was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, as well as the Drum Major for the University of Iowa marching band. He met and married Shirley A. Dahl, from Atlantic, Iowa during this time. Following graduation, they moved to Des Moines where Tad went to work for Gibbs-Cook, the Caterpillar dealer at the time. He then went on to spend many years in the grading and excavating business. He was active in the Jaycees organization and a member of Central Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon during these years. Tad and Shirley had four children throughout this time. They divorced in 1973. Following the divorce, it was Tad's idea that generated the legislation for the Joint Custody Law in the State of Iowa in 1977. Changing careers, he became a Certified Personnel Consultant, managing a Snelling and Snelling employment office in Des Moines for several years. In 1985 he became the co-owner/operator of the White Glove Service along with Dan Pontow. He retired in 1998 from the physical side of the business. Tad's hobbies included tennis, cooking, gardening, music and his dachshunds, Bridgett and Tillie. Tad is survived by his companion of 33 years, Dan Pontow; his ex-wife, Shirley Mellecker; his four children, Kirk (Diane) Mellecker of Park City, Utah, Brent (Amy) Mellecker and Blake(Kathy) Mellecker, both of Chicago, Illinois, and Melissa Clarke of West Des Moines; and seven grandchildren. Also surviving him is his brother, Brooks (Shirley) Mellecker of New Port Richey, Florida; and his sister, Kay (Richard) Wahl of Green Valley, Arizona; several nieces and nephews; as well as his many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three nephews. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
