SALISBURY --Walter D. Wiley, 88, of Salisbury, and formerly of Schenectady, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore after a long illness.
Born in Cohoes, N.Y., on May 6, 1921, he was a son of the late R. Walter Wiley and Annabelle Boyd Wiley.
Walter served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radioman first class. His service took him abroad throughout the South Pacific; he was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations. He was employed by General Electric of Waterford, N.Y., for 30 years. During this time, he helped implement the first computerized order entry system and participated in many additional system enhancements until retirement in July 1981. After retirement, Walter and his wife relocated to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was a co-owner and manager of a small home building business. He and his wife ventured in August 1990 to Salisbury, where he particularly enjoyed visiting Assateague Island, fishing, gardening and painting.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a volunteer docent for more than 10 years at the Salisbury Zoological Park, where he assisted in walking tours and educational programs. He will be remembered most for his wonderful sense of humor, clever wit and love for his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Arline Whitman Wiley; a daughter, Claudia Young and her husband, Jack, of Seaford; four grandchildren, Heather Hapner, Brett Hapner and his wife, Kristin, all of Salisbury, Jonathan Wiley of Redmond, Wash., and Thomas Wiley of Las Vegas; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Wiley of Gainesville, Va.; a brother-in-law, John Whitman of Melbourne, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Walter John Wiley; and three brothers, William, Robert and Charles Wiley.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Holloway Funeral Home, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury. The Rev. George R. Patterson will officiate.
