Birth: Aug. 24, 1930 Leola McPherson County South Dakota, USA Death: Jan. 29, 2012 Wenatchee Chelan County Washington, USA Vernon Dalke, 81, a former Powell resident, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 in NCW Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash. He was born Aug. 24, 1930 to Gottlieb and Martha (Bender) Dalke at Leola, S.D. In 1937 he moved with his family to the Powell area, where he graduated from Powell High School in 1948. During high school he worked part time for Cream of the Valley Dairy. After graduation he went to work full time for the dairy where he met the love of his life, Betty Shanor. They married July 14, 1949 in Cody. They settled in Powell and continued working for the dairy full time, as well as working part time at his father's gas station and drilling water wells. In 1965 Vernon moved his family to East Wenatchee, Wash., where he went to work for his older brother at S & D Paving as the asphalt plant and rock crusher operator. Later he worked for Morrill Asphalt Paving until his retirement in April 1994. Survivors include his wife, Betty Dalke; daughters Dawna (Dean) Fleming, Roxie (Carl) Lewis, and Bobbie (Steve) Mitchell; grandchildren Cameron Lewis, Cari (Rob) Vereb, Eric (Nicole) Mitchell and Megan Mitchell; great-grandchildren Preston and Caden Lewis, Micah Vereb and Travis Escalera. He is also survived by a great nephew, Walter Rook, whom he raised; his oldest brother Ervin and four sisters, Doris Williamson, Shirley Rakestraw, Marge Bradley and Charlotte Eley, as well as many nieces and nephews. His youngest brother, Delbert of Powell, died six hours after Vernon. He also was predeceased by his parents and brother Leo. Burial will take place in Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell, Wyoming next to his brother.
