Bio: Raymond Bullinger Sr., 78, passed away peacefully at the Hospice House on February 24, 2015 surrounded by those who loved him.
He was born April 18, 1936 to John and Anna Bullinger, he was one of seven children growing up on a farm in St. Anthony, North Dakota. Raymond was fifteen when he started his baking career at George?s Bakery in Mandan, North Dakota.
He moved to Mason City, Iowa to further his career in baking and took a position at Cox?s Bakery.
In 1957 a Cox?s Bakery chain opened in Rapid City. On September 15, 1961, Raymond moved his family from Mason City to Rapid City where he began his long and successful career.
He bought Cox?s Bakery in 1972 and renamed it Ray?s Bakery where it was known as an icon in downtown Rapid City at 729 Main Street.
Many businesses sought out Ray?s Bakery to prepare the specific breads and baked goods they wanted to serve in their restaurants.
Raymond loved taking care of his yard and went to extremes planting flowers! Hundreds of starter plants in Styrofoam cups ready for spring planting.
He was an avid fisherman who threw his line in at every opportunity. In 2005 he hooked the big catch at Canyon Lake where he caught his trophy fish at 12.1 lbs., 31? long which he promptly had mounted.
Ray was known for his talent for decorating wedding cakes and other specialty items. Ray won the Christmas house decorating contest in 1992. He had his electrical system upgraded just for Christmas lights! Everything Ray did was to the extreme!
When he retired from the bakery, he worked at Fort Hayes preparing the all you can eat pancakes, baking cakes and preparing for the tourist?s evening meal.
He just wasn?t quite ready to give up that early morning shift. In addition to his part-time work, Ray enjoyed volunteering at the Mission preparing meals.
He was active in numerous fundraisers for individuals and for his church by making and selling delicious donuts and baked goods. People stood in line to make their purchases never knowing when the next fundraiser would be!
Ray is survived by his wife, of 23 years; his children, three sons, Cynthia , Tammy , all of Rapid City, Linda , mother of his children, Sally; siblings, Helen , Bernice a brother, ; numerous nieces, nephews; and special people in his life, Cheryl, Cyd , Angelina , Wes and Tammy .
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Leonard, Edward and Catherine; and his parents, John and Anna Bullinger.
Raymond also enjoyed the lives of his 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, filling their lives with many memories of baking and decorating beautiful baked goods and enjoying the holidays and special occasions together.
Dad?your family will miss you?.your lemon filled donuts, your bread with tons of butter, apple fritters, bunny cakes, holiday goodies?thank you for passing this knowledge onto us and your grandchildren?thank you for teaching us to work hard and to know we can make a difference.
Rest in peace, Dad.
