Rosella Dewald, 88, Jamestown, formerly of Streeter, N.D., died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.
Rosella Graf was born Nov. 2, 1916, on the family farm southwest of Streeter, the daughter of John and Margaret (Oberlander) Graf. She grew up in the area and attended the local rural school, where she received her elementary education. She married Theodore "Ted" Dewald on Nov. 18, 1935, in Streeter. They lived and farmed on his parents’ farm for several years. They moved eight miles north of Lehr, N.D., where they farmed and owned and operated a rural grocery store and gas station for 10 years. They operated a store in Burnstad, N.D., for one year. In 1948, they moved to Streeter, where they owned and operated Dewald’s Fairway Store for 31 years, retiring in 1979. In April 1979, they moved to Jamestown. He died July 14, 1979. In 2002, she became a resident at Central Dakota Heritage Center. In 2004 she moved into Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Streeter; Atonement Lutheran Church and Ruth Circle, Jamestown; Streeter Homemaker’s Club for 40 years; and German Ladies Aid of Streeter Lutheran Church, where she served as president. She enjoyed quilting at church, sewing, crocheting, traveling and playing bingo.
She is survived by three sons, Marvin (Pat), Portland, Ore., Delmer (Donna), Sun City West, Ariz., and the Rev. Ted Jr. (Marlene), LaCrosse, Wis.; four daughters, Madelyn (Archine) Hoffer, Bernice (Floyd) Schauer, and Janet (Earl) Johnson, all Jamestown, and Eileen (Jerome) Hehn, Fargo, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Esther Graf, Streeter; 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Pete, Adam, Ben and Emil; and five sisters, Emma Schumaker, Carolina Martin, Otillia Schumaker, Pauline Schumaker and Margaret Graf.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Atonement Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Steven Berntson officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Sunday, Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
