Birth: Oct. 29, 1936 Atascadero San Luis Obispo County California, USA Death: Jul., 1968 Nevada, USA BAKERSFIELD — Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel for Alten Bender, 34, of 2601 Columbus Street, who died near Las Vegas. The Rev. R.D. Stuebbe will officiate. Mr. Bender was last believed seen in Bakersfield July 12. Sheriff's deputies in Las Vegas said he apparently fell down the side of a 300-foot ravine near Hoover Dam, was injured and could not climb out. His remains were found Feb. 21 by two men who were trying to salvage old cars in the ravine. The area of the accident is in a remote section of mountains, and it was theorized the victim must have walked to the point where he fell. What Mr. Bender was doing in the mountains and how he got there remains a mystery. A native of Atascadero, Mr. Bender had been a resident of Kern County the past 30 years, and was a graduate of Bakersfield High School. He farmed in the Edison area 13 years and more recently was engaged in the real estate business. He was a member of the governing board of the California Potato Growers Association and a member of Grace Reformed Church. Survivors include the widow, Shirley; son, Michael; two daughters, Joy and Sharri; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Bender of Bakersfield; brother, Filmore of Maryland; sister, Mrs. Marjorie Ortali of King City. ============================ Although the obituary implies that Alten Marvin BENDER apparently died accidentally, the family lists him as "murdered in the desert."
