Elizabeth “Betty” Preszler was born to John and Rosina (Schmidt) Striefel on April 13, 1930 in Aberdeen, SD. She was raised in Roscoe, SD with her family and graduated from Roscoe High School in 1949. During high School, she attended Girl’s State and was Carnival Queen. After high school, she attended Beauty School in Watertown, SD. After beauty school she worked at Vanity Beauty Salon in Aberdeen.
In July of 1952, she traveled to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO to marry her high school sweetheart, Ralph Preszler. This union was joined at the base chapel on July 12, 1952. While Ralph was in the Army, in the Korean War, she lived in Roscoe and their first son, Ronald, was born. When Ralph returned from the war in 1954, they moved to Aberdeen, where he attended college and she worked at Vanity Beauty Salon.
In 1957, they moved to a farm northwest of Roscoe, where they remained the rest of their married life. During this time, children Debra, Greg and Mark were added to the family. Betty opened a beauty shop in the family home, which was in continuous business for 48 years. Her “shop” ladies were fast friends and meant the world to her. She loved beautiful plants and flowers which she maintained at home and in the yard.
Betty was baptized, confirmed and attended St. Thomas Catholic Church for her entire life. She was a charter member of the St. Catherine Drexel Catholic Daughters, St. Thomas Altar Society, and taught CCD. After her children were grown, she joined the choir, in which he was a member until she turned 80. She was a faithful servant and loved worshiping her faith.
Betty and Ralph enjoyed celebrating many occasions, especially where there was dancing and socializing. You would always find Betty tapping her toes, clapping her hands and ready for the next dance. She enjoyed ceramics for many years and made lovely creations. She especially enjoyed making Christmas ornament which adorn trees near and far. She collected dolls and loved to display and protect them. Betty Boop creations were a favorite. She loved playing pranks and joking with some of her “Favorite” people. She loved and doted on her children, grandchildren and especially the new great-grand babies.
While her children were home, there were many young men that counted her as a second mother and there was always room at the table for another hungry young man.
During her time at ManorCare, she was so honored when chosen as the “Smile” winner and resident of the month. Betty cherished and was cherished by all of the staff at ManorCare and her family is eternally grateful to them. Her family is also grateful to the many relatives and friends who visited and provided comfort.
Betty went with her angels to meet Jesus on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at ManorCare in Aberdeen.
