Milbert A. Bender was born to Albert J. and Lenora (Diede) Bender on April 12, 1931, on a farm in McPherson County near Wetonka, SD. He worked with his parents on the farm and attended country school until the 8th grade. He enlisted in the United States Marines in 1952, where he fought in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in February of 1954.
Milbert married Darlene Schwartz on June 14, 1957, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Leola. They made their home in McPherson County two miles north of his parent’s homestead. He loved working on the farm and taking care of their cattle. In his healthy years he enjoyed going fishing, hunting and playing cards.
Milbert and Darlene sold the farm and moved to Aberdeen in 2013. Milbert loved to take a drive in the country and look at all the crops and see what the farmers were doing.
He enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings and watching the kids play and having the neighbors come by for a visit. Milbert loved to eat cookies and his favorite phrase was “Holy Smokes!”
Grateful for having shared Milbert’s life are his wife of 60 years, Darlene Bender; two daughters, Sue (Jeff) Mott and Deb (Rob) Haliburton; siblings: Arlene (Marvin) Rall, John (Jean) Bender and Jerald (Lea) Bender; and many nieces and nephews.
Milbert was preceded in death by his parents.
