Arthur Schaffer died Thursday, November 16, 2006 in Jamestown surrounded by his family. Arthur Schaffer was born June 15, 1918 in Wishek, North Dakota, the son of John and Margaret (Nies) Schaffer. He grew up on the family farm near Wishek, where he farmed for five years after marrying Katie Schock from Lehr, North Dakota on October 10, 1940. In 1946, Art and Katie bought a farm five miles west of Montpelier, North Dakota. They farmed until 1965 at which time they moved to Jamestown, North Dakota. From 1966 to 1981, Art worked as a psychiatric aid at the North Dakota State Hospital. Art enjoyed camping with family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. to visit his children and grandchildren. Art was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church. Music was a big part of Art's life. Art and Katie were married for 66 years: she survives. Art is survived by his four children: Gary (Linda), Lindenhurst, NY; Judith (Melfried) Olson, Honolulu, HI; Janice (Timothy) Schmidt, Huntsville, AL; and John (Theresa), Brush, CO. The ten grandchildren who survive are Timothy Schaffer, Andrea (Schmidt) Miille, Gregory Schaffer, Tanya (Olson) Yerich, Brian Schmidt, Jared Schaffer, Travis Olson, Jessica Schaffer, Jeremy Schaffer, and Erin Schaffer. Four great grandchildren and a step-great grandchild also survive him. His sister, Martha Schiable, Leola, South Dakota, also survives. Art was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, two brothers; John and Reinhold and four sisters; Rose Knoll, Freida Rohrback, Emma Warner, and Viola Iszler. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Schaffer.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown with Rev. Gary Ball-Kilbourne, Rev. Norman Winkelman, and Rev. Clayton Scheaffer officiating. Visitation: 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday, November 20, 2006 at the Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown, ND. Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Monday, November 20, 2006 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel. Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, North Dakota.
