Edmund Schnabel, 92, Bismarck, formerly of Ashley, died July 10, 2002, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dr. Bradley R. Stoltenow officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Ashley Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Edmund Schnabel was born Sept. 9, 1909, to Adam and Lydia (Weisenburger) Schnabel on a farm southeast of Venturia. He farmed with his parents, later taking over the family operation. On Sept. 29, 1935, he married Mary Treftz, and continued farming until 1945, at which time they moved to Ashley, where he went into and operated his own trucking business. During this period, the family moved to Victor, Calif., for two years, 1954 and 1955.
In June 1965, he married Alvina Klipfel and moved to Bismarck, where he worked for Kirschmann Mfg. and Melroe Mfg. for 11 and 1/2 years, retiring in 1976. He then worked part time for eight years with Bismarck Super Valu, again retiring in 1985.
For over 30 years, he was very active with the Dakota Pioneer Chapter of Germans from Russia Historical Society, where he also served as a board member for many years, and during those years missed very few conventions. He enjoyed dancing and recording old time music, of which he had about 500 tapes. He also enjoyed traveling, visiting with people and taking social trips to area casinos, and was a longtime Moose and Eagles member.
Survivors include three sons, Milbert, Bismarck, Dennis (Arly), Mobridge, S.D., and Douglas (Glenna), Wilton, Calif.; one brother, Lawrence (Janice), Ashley; three sisters, Anna Rott and Emelia (John) Lippert, both of Ashley, and Bertha (Harold) Spitzer, Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Freida Schnabel, Ashley; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Liz Sailer, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alvina; and two brothers and two sisters, of which one brother and one sister were infants.
Memorials may be made to the Dakota Pioneer Chapter of Germans from Russia Historical Society, C/O Ed Schneider, 2124 E. Ave. E, Bismarck, N.D. 58501.
