GLEN ULLIN — Herbert “Herbie” Bender, 84, Glen Ullin, formally of Lisbon, passed away on Aug. 11, 2011. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Interment will be on Tuesday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, one hour prior to the start of the service at the funeral home.
Herb was born and raised in McClusky, to Marie Bender. He attended school in McClusky though the seventh-grade. Herb enlisted in the U.S. Navel Service on Nov. 29, 1944, serving in World War II.
On Feb. 2, 1948, he married Elsie Reinke and together they had seven children. He went to school to become a mechanic. After completing his schooling, he held various jobs as a mechanic and worked in the tire business. Starting in 1951, he worked as an usher for Billy Graham. He lived in Bismarck until 1989 when he moved to Lisbon, where he retired.
Herb enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his friends. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and also a member of the VFW.
He is survived by his children, Peggy (Robert) Niles, Tucson Ariz., Doug (Pat) Bender, Mandan, Kay (Marlin) Reddin, Willmington, N.C., Linda (Craig) Spiegel, Fremont, Calif., Terry Putnam, Medford, Ore., and Betsy (Ron) Zarr, Bismarck. His grandchildren include Brad Niles, Melissa Pierce, Todd and Chad Bender, Gino Reddin, Nathaniel and Patrick Gouge, Wesley and Travis Patten, Brittany and Ambriella Zarr. He has four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his Aunt Esther Wahl, Washington, and finally his best friend and companion, Lorraine Kamrath (Lisbon).
He is preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Marie and Orlando Loewens; and his daughters, Faye Bender (1957) and Sandra Patten (2008).
