Helen Bender, daughter of Gottlieb and Katherina (Spitzer) Bender, was born Nov. 21, 1921, near Streeter. She grew up rural Streeter and attended German Township School. After Helen's schooling she helped on the family farm.
Helen was united in marriage to Willie Lachenmeier Jan. 24, 1941, at Napoleon. They farmed 12 miles northeast of Napoleon until September 1952, when they moved into Napoleon. Helen worked at various businesses in Napoleon before going to work for Napoleon Care Center, where she worked for 18 years, retiring in the late '80s. Helen continued to volunteer at Napoleon Care Center and delivered meals for Napoleon Senior Citizens.
Helen was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and enjoyed providing music, teaching Sunday school, serving on the church council and was treasurer of the United Methodist Ladies group. Helen had a green thumb and enjoyed her plants and garden. She loved going to Lake Isabel and riding on the pontoon. Helen loved her grandchildren and having them visit her. She enjoyed making German food and kuchen for her family and friends. Helen entered Napoleon Care Center Aug. 16, 2007.
Helen died Sept. 8, 2007, at Napoleon Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, in 2000; her parents; three brothers, Edward, Ludwig and Alvin; and three sisters, Emma, Ernestine and Bertha.

Helen Lachenmeier
NAPOLEON - The funeral for Helen Lachenmeier, 85, Napoleon, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at Salem United Methodist Church, Napoleon. Burial will be in Napoleon City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, continuing from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with prayer services at 7 p.m.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Adeline (Marvin) Wolf and Lorraine (Charles) Rau, all of Napoleon; five grandchildren, Lorin (LeAnn) Wolf, Bismarck, Galen (Becky) Wolf, Hernada, Miss., Jason Wolf and special friend, Sarah Krafchy, Chicago, Anita (David) Horner, Fargo, and Travis Rau and special friend, Melody Hintz, Bismarck; five great-grandchildren, Christopher Wolf, Brooklyn Wolf, Nicholas Horner, Nathan Horner and Samantha Horner; one brother, Art (Esther) Bender, Washburn; two brother-in-laws, Art (Denelda) Lachenmeier, Tappen, and August (Lorraine) Lachenmeier, Harden, Mont.; three sister-in-laws, Edna Lachenmeier, Cleveland, Ella (Albert) Guthmiller, Jamestown, and Alice Irvine, Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, in 2000; her parents; three brothers, Edward, Ludwig and Alvin; and three sisters, Emma, Ernestine and Bertha.
