Joan A. Ahl, 88, died December 19, 2013, at Regency Manor Nursing Home in Chelan, WA. Joan was born and raised on the family farm south of Beulah, ND. She attended Oliver County Schools. She met her future husband, Arnold R. Ahl of Hebron, ND, in 1943, when he was home on leave during WWII. They were married at St. Benedict's Catholic Church south of Beulah on August 20, 1946. Arnold was a 22 year military Veteran and in that time, they transferred to many different Army assignments. They lived in various locations in Washington state, California, Arizona, Iowa, Germany and Okinawa. Upon Arnold's retirement from the Army, they moved to Des Moines, WA and Joan remained there for almost 25 years. They were married for 44 years, and after Arnold died, she moved to Chelan, WA and often said it was one of her best decisions. She loved her family there, her apartment and all her friends. Joan was very active in her church; her faith was extremely important to her. She joined the bible study group and served coffee and donuts after Sunday Mass for many years. Joan also was a prize winning gardener. Any house they lived in, the yard was always better for her having lived there. Her yard, especially in Des Moines, was her pride and joy and a source of outstanding beauty. She loved to dance; she and Arnold could often be found dancing at the Burien Elks Lodge, but after Arnold died, she never danced again.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter, Donald (Janis) of Renton, WA, Joseph (Pam) of Chelan, WA and Sherry Pearson (David) of Salkum, WA. She also leaves seven grandchildren, one great-grandson and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; two brothers; and one sister. She will be missed by all her family, but we are comforted by knowing she will always be watching after us and that she's now dancing and gardening again.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church Friday, December 27, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Urn Committal Service will be held at a later date at Fort Lawton Cemetery, Seattle, WA. Services are entrusted to Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan, WA. Please feel free to leave any memories for the family at www.prechtrose.com.
