Nick was born on a farm near St. Anthony, No. Dakota to John and Gertrude (Schmidt) Gustin. He had 8 brothers and 1 sister. He started his education in a one room school, then went to boarding school in St. Anthony, and later attended St. John's High School in Collegeville, MN. He married Emelia Renner in 1932 and moved to Flasher, ND, where he managed the Farmer's Union Oil Co. In April of 1945, the family moved to Tacoma, WA, where he was employed by Mueller Harkins Buick and later Gilchrist Buick as Parts Manager until his retirement in 1971. His memory for dates, numbers and family events amazed everyone, even up until the time of his death. His hobbies were bowling, playing cards, and the challenge of puzzles. Dad had a deep faith and was very family-oriented. He and Mom enjoyed their many car trips to No. Dakota, California and Canada. He was a member of Visitation Parish, Knights of Columbus and Holy Names Society. Nick was preceded in death by Emelia, his wife of 58 years, son Billy and grandchildren Mark, Richard and Elizabeth Gustin . He is survived by 3 sons, Duaine (Peggy), Gig Harbor, WA; Arnie (Caylene), LaCrescenta, CA; Norman (Glenice), Fircrest, WA; 3 daughters, Donna (Rick) Bader, Edmonds, WA; Dorothy (Ed) Harris, Tacoma, WA; JoAnne (Wayne) Stoltz, Lakewood, WA; 18 grandchildren, Mike Gustin, Susan (Dave) Lykins, David Gustin, Kristin (Louis) Guizetti, Carrie (Tim) Biese, Steve (Jennifer) Bader, Diana (Ron) Gustafson, Nicole (Robert) Yates, Cheri and Arne Harris, Charlene (Gary) Campbell, Brent Gustin, Greg (Stacy) Gustin, Michelle (Craig) Roberts, Darin (Kerri) Gustin, Lisa (Jim) Lund, Renee and Jason Stoltz; 13 great grandchildren, Maggie Lykins, Kate Biese, Albert and Luke Bader, Sarah Gustafson, Ripley, Erin and Lucy Yates, Crystal Harris, Amanda and Spencer Campbell, Nicholas and Sidney Roberts; 1 brother, Joe, Eau Claire, WI; 1 sister, Ida Zander, Mandan, ND; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Viewing 10am - 7pm Wednesday; the Rosary will be recited 7:00 pm Wednesday, both at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2:00 pm Thursday at Visitation Catholic Church. Committal Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Visitation Catholic School. Arrangements by Piper-Morley-Mellinger Funeral Directors, 472-3353.

He was preceded in death by Emelia, his wife of 58 years; one son, Billy; three grandchildren, Mark, Richard and Elizabeth Gustin; his parents; and seven brothers, Ralph, Tom, The Rev. Arno; Laurence, Mike, Johnny and Frank.
