- [S927] Obituary.
Frances Catherine Keelan, age 80, passed away at her home in Arvada, CO surrounded by her family and friends on Sunday, February 19, 2017. She was born on September 20, 1936 in Dickinson, ND to John and Caroline Hartman. Fran is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leo and Jerry Hartman; sisters, Irene Schmalz, Caroline Kowis; and her husband, James “Kurley” Keelan. She is survived by brothers, Paul and Roy Hartman; twin sister Florence “Flossie” Schmidt; sons Kevin T. (Kathleen) and Kenny J. (Mary) Keelan; grandchildren, Kristopher, Katelyn, and Kara; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Fran dedicated her life to serving God and caring for others. At the age of 13 she left the family farm in Dickinson, ND to continue her education and become a nun. Of her many contributions one of her biggest was being an educator for 33 years, teaching as a nun at private schools and, after she left the sisterhood, at public schools. She married Jim Keelan and together they had 2 wonderful boys. She was a very present mother to her sons (and at times to her husband, too!), and later an incredibly involved grandmother to her 3 adoring grandchildren. Fran was especially engaged in Spirit of Christ Catholic Community where her presence will always be felt.
Visitation will be Thursday, 2/23/17 at 6:00pm followed at 7:00pm by a Vigil Service. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, 2/24/17 at 11:00am at Spirit of Christ Catholic Community, 7400 W. 80th Ave., Arvada, CO. The Funeral Mass will be followed by a lunch buffet at the church. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 2:30. The procession will leave the church around 1:45.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on behalf of Fran Keelan, 11439 West 85th Place, Arvada, CO 80005. Fran's family wishes to thank the kind and loving folks at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center, St. Anthony’s Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, Collier Hospice, Home Instead, Spirit of Christ Catholic Community, and Fran’s many friends, family members, and neighbors who supported us so sturdily through Fran’s final weeks. We could not have met her wish of living out her final days at home without the strength of your love and support. We are forever grateful.
