"A FATAL ACCIDENT
Ernest Kopecky is Instantly Killed and his Daughter Dies of Injuries in Auto-Train Collision Near Ree Heights
A schocking accident occurred at the railroad crossing just west of Ree Heights, Friday evening, when Ernest Kopoecky, of Ontario township, was instatnly killed, and his daughter, six years old, was so badly injured that she died at the Miller Hopital, Monday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Kopecky and three children had been to Miller and were on their way home in a Ford car. While crossing the railroad track the car was struck by the passenger from the west. The car was completely demolished and Mr. Kopecky was instantly killed. Mrs. Kopecky, while bruised and cut, was not seriously injured. The little girl and her brother one year younger, did not fare as well as their mother, and the baby, 18 months old, escaped without injury.
The injured were brought to the Hagin and Pangburn hospital, where an operation was performed on the little girl in the hopes of saving her life, but it was unavailing and she passed away Monday morning. The five year old boy, although seriously injured, is on the road to recovery.
It is thought that the bright sunlight shining in Mr. Kopecky's eyes prevented him from seeing the approaching train until it was too late. No blane in any way is attached to the engineer of the passenger train, as it was impossible for him to stop the engine when he realized the driver of the automobile did not see the oncoming train.
Two older children were at home when the accident occurred.
This sad accident emphasizes the slogan of all railroads: "Cross crossings cautiously."
Ernest Kopecky was 35 years old and had lived all his life in Hyde and Hand Counties.
The funeral of the father and daughter was held at the Lutheran church in Miller, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Leikauf, of Orient, officiating. The remains were interred in the Bohemian cemetery in eastern Hyde County."
