Betty Bittel Payne, 76, of Owensboro died on Oct. 18, 2009, at the Rosewood Health Care Center in Bowling Green, where she lived for the last three years. The Daviess County native was retired from St. Stephen Cathedral School, where she worked for over 20 years. Until her retirement, she was an active member of St. Stephen Cathedral as the president of the Ladies Altar Society and as the local Girl Scout troop leader. She was the daughter of the late Cora and Frank Abel of Roselawn, Ind. Her husbands who preceded her in death were Raymond Bittel and William Payne, as did a sister, Henrietta Phillips. Survivors include four daughters, Grace Moore, Patty Spice and Debbie McCarty of Bowling Green, and Lisa McCarty of Centertown; three sons-in-law, John Moore and Jon McCarty of Bowling Green and Dr. Joe McCarty of Centertown; a sister, Geri Woudema of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Bill Abel of Roselawn, Ind.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Clark, Jonathon Moore, Charles Spice, Joseph McCarty and Chelsea McCarty; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Cathedral. Burial will immediately follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to: Hospice Memorial Fund, Hospice of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301.
