Bio: MAPLETON, Iowa | Carrie Johnston, 93, of Mapleton, formerly of the Smithland, Iowa area, died Aug. 5, 2015, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Root Funeral Home?Willman Chapel in Rodney, Iowa, with the Rev. Jena Manchester officiating. Burial will follow in Grant Cemetery, rural Rodney. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rootfuneralhomes.com.Carrie Johnston, the daughter of Elmer and Anna (Jensen) Skow, was born on Jan. 28, 1922, in Homer, Neb. Carrie's family made their home near Homer and then they moved to Iowa. The family made their home on the Krusen Farm in the Hornick area. She started her schooling in Rodney and then went to Mapleton, where she graduated high school. While going to Mapleton, she roomed with Nina Graham Johnson.On Aug. 18, 1939, Carrie was united in marriage to Lloyd Johnston in Dakota City. To this union four children were born, Margaret Ann, Melvin, Earl, and Dawn. The family farmed and made their home in the Holly Springs/Smithland area. Lloyd passed away in 1984 and Carrie continued living on the farm until moving to Mapleton in December 1998. In 2011, she moved to Maple Heights Nursing Home. Carrie became known as the ambassador of Maple Heights and she loved all of her friends and staff at the care center.Carrie was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing cards with friends, and fishing. In her later years, she enjoyed golfing. In 1974, Carrie and Lloyd started wintering in Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Carrie was a member of Ticonic Methodist Church.Carrie is survived by her children, Melvin and Ruth Ann Johnston of Smithland, Earl and Julie Johnston of Mapleton, and Dawn and Greg Claus of Smithland; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dorothy and Al Cosh of Hornick, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; one daughter, Margaret Ann and Ronald Maynard; two great-grandchildren, Baby Lynn Mitchell and Chris Maynard; and two brothers, John Skow and Glen Skow.Memorial contributions may be directed to Ticonic Methodist Church.
