SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Margaret Ann "Maggie" Maynard, 61, of Smithland died Friday, May 2, 2003.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery in Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Margaret Ann Maynard was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Sioux City, the daughter of Lloyd and Carrie (Skow) Johnston. She grew up at Holly Springs, Iowa, where she attended grade school. After moving with her family to their farm near Smithland, she went on to graduate from Mapleton High School with the class of 1959.
On June 18, 1960, Margaret Ann was united in marriage to Ronald Avery Maynard at Ticonic, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Smithland, where they raised their four children. Ronald died Dec. 11, 1996.
Maggie was a member of Ticonic United Methodist Church, where she was also active in United Methodist Women. As a young girl, she took music lessons and developed a vocal talent that led to her singing at her church, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. For many years, Maggie was involved in bowling leagues, a sport she shared with many good friends. She liked antiquing, gardening, caring for her flowers and cooking "for the guys." If one of her grandchildren had an athletic game of any kind, you could find "Grandma Maggie" somewhere in the stands. She also enjoyed the freedom she found in riding motorcycles, but her greatest pleasure was always the time she shared with her entire family.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her mother, Carrie Johnston of Mapleton; a daughter, Ronda and her husband, Alan Timmerman of Castana, Iowa; three sons, Michael Maynard of Mapleton, Mark Maynard and his wife, Joanne of Castana, and John Maynard and his wife, Tracey of Battle Creek, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Justin and Logan Maynard, Matthew, Christopher, Robert, Laura and Rich Maynard, Craig, Samantha and Curtis Timmerman and Tyler, Cody and Dylan Maynard; a sister, Dawn and her husband, Greg Claus of Smithland; two brothers and their wives, Melvin and Ruth Ann Johnson of Smithland, and Earl and Julie Johnston of Mapleton; along with other relatives, neighbors and many close friends.
In addition to her husband, Margaret Ann was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd Johnston.
