JAMESTOWN -- Theodore "Ted" Eckman, 86, Jamestown, formerly of Wishek, died July 13, 1998, in a Jamestown nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Richard Spiedel officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery, Wishek.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday, both at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Ted was born on Aug. 20, 1911, on the family farm, 12 miles southwest of Wishek, the son of Frederick and Christina (Weisser) Eckman. He grew up on the family farm and received his elementary education in rural McIntosh County schools. Ted continued to live and work on the family farm for several years, later moving to Burnstad. In 1936, he purchased an interest in a local bar, which he owned and operated until 1939.
Ted was married to Hulda Meidinger on Nov. 13, 1938, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church at rural Zeeland. Following their marriage, they lived in Burnstad until 1939, when they moved to Wishek. In Wishek, Ted owned and operated Eckman's Place Bar until 1950. In 1946, he and his brother August purchased Eckman's Standard Station, which he later ran from 1951 until 1978, when his son Kenneth purchased the station. Ted continued to help his son at the station until moving to Jamestown in 1992. Since September of 1997, Ted has been a resident of Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in Jamestown.
He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, and he belonged to the Bismarck Elks Club. Ted was a big baseball fan, listening and watching on radio and television, and supporting the local Wishek amateur baseball team by his attendance. He especially took great pride when his grandson, Brent, played baseball.
He is survived by his wife, Hulda; three sons, Kenneth, Wishek, Randal "Randy" and Esther, Mandan, and David and special friend Lori Burns, Eden Prairie, Minn.; four grandchildren, Brian Eckman, Omega, Ill., Bradley Eckman, Rochester, Minn., Bruce "B.J." Eckman, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Brent Eckman, St. Paul, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachel Eckman; and four sisters, Mrs. Ottelia Just, Wishek, Mrs. Pauline (Leopold) Meidinger, Wishek, Mrs. Lydia (Reinhold) Just, LaMoure, and Mrs. Magdalena Braun, Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, August and Edward. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)
