After 76 wonderful years, the Lord welcomed Ben Goehring to Heaven on March 1, 2008, after a valiant battle with cancer. Ben was born June 15, 1931, in Lodi. He resided in the same vineyard east of Lodi his entire life. He was the youngest child of Christina (Knoll) and P. J. Goehring. He attended Alpine-Victor Elementary School and graduated from Lodi High School in 1949. He was a 1956 graduate of the University of California - Berkeley where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He was an avid fan and supporter of the California Golden Bears football team.
He served in the United States Air Force in Germany. He was the recipient of the U.S.A.F. Commendation Medal, the German Occupation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a lifetime member of The American Legion. Ben was married to Shirley Heimbuck on November 12, 1961, at Zion Evangelical Church in Lodi. They lived their entire married life on the same vineyard of Ben's birth. Two sons were born of this union, Brad in 1965 and Brian in 1966. Ben was the youngest of seven brothers and two sisters. He was the President and CEO of Goehing Meats, Inc., a family business. Mr. Goehring served as President of Pacific Coast Meat Association. He received the E. Floyd Forbes Award, the prestigious award for excellence and outstanding contribution to the meat industry. He was a founding director and Chairman of the Board of Bank of Lodi. He served as director of Guild Wineries and Doctor's Hospital of Lodi. He was a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West and chaired the Alpine-Victor Farm Bureau.
Ben possessed a deep faith in Christ and was a lifelong and very active member of First Baptist Church of Lodi. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for many years, Chairman of the Building Committee of the new church on Mills Avenue, and Chairman of the Christian Education Board. He was president of the Ambassador Sunday School Class for many years. He and Shirley were leaders of the Grape Bunch, a home Bible Study. Ben was a Director of the Center of Biblical Studies in Modesto. He served on the President's Council of the North American Baptist Seminary. In 1972, he, with his wife Shirley, was founder of Mokelumne River School, where he served on the board for many years. He also served on the Alpine-Victor School Board. Farming his vineyard and helping his sons was his great joy. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.
Ben is survived by his wife, Shirley, of 46 years; his sons, Brad and his wife Kristin of Clements and Brian and his wife Cathy of Lodi; four grandchildren, Blake, Lexus, Bryson and Brielle. Also surviving are five brothers, Levi (Mavis) Goehring, Elmer (Lorraine) Goehring, Harold (Ruth) Goehring, Victor Goehring and Clifford (Karen) Goehring; one sister, Elsie (Marvin) Abeldt; sisters-in-law, Barbara Zumbrennen of Casper, WY, Norma (John) Gates and June Goehring of Lodi; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christine and P.J. Goehring; his brother, Reuben and his sister, Emma.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8, at ? p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lodi. There is no visitation and committal is private.
