Ray Froehlich, 69, of Brookings, SD died Sunday, December 5, 2010. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30am Thursday, December 9, 2010 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, December 8, 2010 with a 7:00pm Liturgical Wake Service at Rudes Funeral Home, Brookings.
Raymond William Froehlich was born August 27, 1941 in Dickinson, ND, the son of William and Wilhelmina (Kuntz) Froehlich.
Ray grew up and attended school in Dickinson, graduating from Dickinson High School. Ray then attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND graduating in 1962. Ray was united in marriage to Vivian Dukart on December 27, 1961 in Dickinson, ND. Following his graduation he moved to Brookings, SD and worked in the City Engineers Office as a City Building Inspector for 40 years.
Ray was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the St. Thomas More Catholic Cemetery Board, the Brookings Board of Appeals, the Knights of Columbus, South Dakota Building Officials Association where he served as an officer.
Ray enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, collecting wrenches and antiques. Being a handyman and always willing to express his opinions to friends and foe, and he was a farmer at heart.
When Ray was hired at the Engineering Office, it was a two man team and Ray did everything from building projects to surveying streets, sidewalks, and drafting. Before retiring in 2003, he was instrumental in designing the Edgebrook Club House and former Liquor Store along with numerous other city projects.
Ray will be remembered as a mentor to the many engineering interns who worked in the Brookings Engineers office during their years in college at SDSU. He shared his knowledge gained from years of experience and his own brand of common sense that he learned through trial and error.
Ray is survived by his wife, Vivian Froehlich of Brookings; two daughters, Annette (Kirk) Edison of Sioux Falls, SD and Sherri Froehlich of Brookings; and one son, David Froehlich of Brookings; his grandchildren, Madaline, Sarah, Daniel, Krystal, Jacquelin and Sam; a brother, Tom (Vernetta) Froehlich of Dickinson, ND; a sister, Donata (Phil) Ramsteck of Loveland, CO; his brothers-in-law, Albert Dukart of Dickinson, ND, Clarence (Diane) Dukart of Tampa, FL, Donald (Linda) Dukart of Flower Mound, TX, Dennis Dukart of Dickinson, ND and LaVerne (Bonnie) Frank of Billings, MT; a sister-in-law, Vera (Leonard) Kadramas of Billings, MT.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arnold.
