Mary was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Odense, N.D., to John and Margaret (Schaff) Schmidt. On Jan. 20, 1948, she married Anton J. Schantz in Odense and they soon moved to Mandan. Family was the most important thing to Mary and she enjoyed taking care of her children as they grew, welcoming each new grandchild and family member with an enormous amount of love. Mary was especially fond of family gatherings and having everyone around. A talented cook and baker, her family enjoyed her specialties of cream chicken, apple bars and many German recipes. After her family was grown, Mary enjoyed cleaning homes for others and socializing at the Spirit of Life soup kitchen.
Those who knew Mary will remember her energy and zest for life. Very outgoing, she loved to go shopping with her special and loving friend, Betty, and also play cards, bingo and quilt. A huge fan of polka hour, it was often heard on the radio in her home. Mary was very observant, always noticing a familiar face in a crowd. Never shy, she would strike up a conversation with just about anyone. Her faith was important to her and Mary said daily prayers and attended church as often as she was able. Generous, kind and loving, this very special woman will be missed by those who loved her.
Blessed to have shared her life are two daughters, Vivian (Robert) Holzer, Bismarck, and Laura Markel, Irving, Texas; three sons, Randy (Nora), Hazen, and Tony Jr. (friend, Lou) and Ervin (Cori), all of Bismarck; two stepdaughters, Delores (Tony) Bonogofsky, Pampa, Texas, and Leona (John) McDonald, Niagra, Wis.; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret (Matt) Gerhardt, Yakima, Wash.; three brothers, Joseph (Emily) Schmidt and Jacob Schmidt, all of Bismarck, and Tony (Judy) Schmidt, Portland, Ore.; her special and loving friend of 52 years, Betty Weinhandl, Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Anton, in 1996; her parents; one daughter, Mary Schantz; stepdaughter, Eleanor (Wilfred) Kurtz; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rose (Val) Hoffman, Josephine (John) Vogel, Barbara (George) Hoffman and Celestina (Frank) Grossman; one brother, Nick Schmidt; and sister-in-law, Cecilia Schmidt.
