DOROTHEA NEHER “Dorothy” was born September 24, 1926 at Paradise, ND to Henry and Katherine (Fuchs) Neher. She was baptized October 24, 1926 at St. John’s at Paradise, ND and confirmed July 7, 1940 at St. Luke’s in Leith, ND. Dorothy attended country school near her home and transferred to Leith, ND. Following her sophomore year, she moved to Oregon for a couple years and then returned to North Dakota where she graduated from Mott High School at the age of twenty-one.
Dorothy worked for two summers for a bachelor farmer, taught school for eight months (as a high school graduate, she was qualified), and worked for a time at the Grant County ASCS office in Carson.
On October 6, 1949, after eight years of courtship, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Jacob Ketterling at Mott, ND. They lived in the Black Hills of South Dakota where he worked at Homestake Gold Mine for a time, later returning to North Dakota where Kenneth worked for Grant and Sioux County farmers and ranchers. They also lived in New Salem, ND for a short time.
In 1958, they purchased a café and service station in Watauga and established “Dot’s Café” and “Ken’s Service”. In 1965, they acquired the “Phillips 66” bulk fuel dealership. Dorothy and Ken operated the café and service station together until 1971 and they continued the bulk fuel business until retiring in 1987. They retired to a much simpler life as baby sitters for two young boys, who became very dear to them.
The Ketterling’s remained in Watauga until 2000. Following Ken’s death, Dorothy moved to Liberty Heights in Mandan, but she didn’t forget her old friends in Watauga. Until two years ago, she drove back to Watauga once a month to spend a few days attending card parties and her “Country Gal’s” women’s club meetings. The first few years she lived in Mandan, she volunteered as a “Grandma” for a girl at a correctional facility in Mandan. She spent many hours volunteering at Liberty Heights and helping the elderly by taking them grocery shopping, to the Beauty Shop, to the bank, and helping them do their laundry.
Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and loved to laugh and have a good time. She was very affectionately known as “Grandma Dot” to many.
She carried her faith with her to the very end providing her and those around her much peace. Her relationship with her Lord and Savior was admired by all who knew her.
Dorothy passed away on Sunday evening, April 17, 2011 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.
Surviving family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Larry Williams, Cokato, MN, 2 grandchildren, Carla (Shawn) McClay, Mound, MN, Jennifer (Jeff) Nowak, Silver Lake, MN 5 great grandchildren, Brittany, Shaun, Katie, Ella, and Miranda; 1 brother, Fred Neher, Elgin, ND; and 1 sister, Elsie Parsons, Leith, ND; numerous nieces and nephews, and Dorothy’s special families, Nick, Cindy, Jess and Logan Nehl, Lorin and Sandy Woodbury, Wade, Shawn, Cassie, Tyler, and their families.
