Obituary:
Ruben Walz, 79, Jamestown, ND, died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center. Ruben was born August 5, 1932 on a farm south of Pettibone in Lakeside Township, ND, the son of Christian and Mathilda (Schick) Walz, Jr. He was baptized in the Petersville Church, north of Pettibone, ND. He attended elementary school in Pettibone for five years, then the family moved to Jamestown in 1944. He finished his elementary education at Franklin School and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1950. He was confirmed on May 12, 1946 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Jamestown. Ruben joined the US Navy on April 29, 1952 in Jamestown and served his country during the Korean Conflict as an Aviation Machinist Mate. He was honorably discharged on May 31, 1954 and returned to North Dakota. On September 5, 1955 Ruben married Grace Alice Schober at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. They made their home in Jamestown and Ruben returned to work for the Red Owl grocery store, where he also worked during high school. He held various positions in his 28 years with them, including Produce Manager, retiring in 1978. He went on to work for the Keebler Company for nine years and for the Dakota Clinic/Innovis for ten years. Ruben was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown, where he served on the church council and was a Lay Sacramentarian. He had also been a member of the American Legion since 1963. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and traveling. Ruben & Grace traveled to all 50 states, Canada, Europe, South America, Australia, New Zeeland, Mexico and the Caribbean. He enjoyed time spent with family, especially his grandchildren. Ruben is survived by his wife of 56 years, Grace, Jamestown; three sons, David Allen (Christeen) Walz, Grand Forks, ND, Donald Lee (Amy) Walz, Jamestown and Dean Jeffrey (Bridget) Walz, North Walpole, NH; three grandsons, Benjamin, Andrew and Nathaniel Walz; two granddaughters, Isabelle and Violet Walz; one step-granddaughter, Meaghann Harmon; one sister, Elsie Cuffe, Seattle, WA; three brothers, Marvin (Linda) Walz, West Fargo, ND, Robert Walz (Loretta Hektner), St. George, UT and Thomas (Denise) Walz, Pelican Rapids, MN; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Walz, Ottawa, KS, Marion Drenth, Jamestown and Leona Schober, West Fargo, ND; one brother-in-law, Robert Lewis, Sr., Fargo, ND; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Deborah Ann Walz in 2006; two sisters, Mary Lewis and Leona Walz; and one brother, Eugene Walz.
