Howard Schwind
Howard Herbert Schwind, Spokane, Wash., passed away April 25, 2006, after a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 30, at New Kassel Reformed Cemetery, 11 miles north of Zeeland, with the Rev. Tammy Floyd, Wishek, officiating.
Howard was born May 16, 1932, in Zeeland, the son of Henry and Magdalene (Meidinger) Schwind. Howard enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea for 24 months. He then attended Winona State Teachers College in Minnesota. Upon receiving his teaching credentials, he taught in Zeeland, Langdon, Round Lake, Minn., Hanna, Wyo., and Eureka, S.D.
After leaving the teaching profession, he pursued a career working with culinary arts, a career that took him many places. He started his career working at the Bel Air Bay and Beach Club in Santa Monica, Calif. Howard moved to Spokane, Wash., and was the pastry chef at the Spokane Country Club for 23 years. He received numerous awards, including a silver medal in a national competition sponsored in 1970, by the Culinary Institute of America. his accomplishment was acknowledged in BonAppetit Magazine and a card from President Richard Nixon. After retiring, he pursued his love of gardening and crafts.
Mourning his passing are Howard's brothers, Melvin (Erna), Jamestown, Waltmer (Bertha) Wishek, Margetus (Eva), Fargo, Garold (Beatrice), Goldsboro, N.C., and Harley (Lola), Lamoure; and his sisters, Lillian Sayler, Wishek, Hildegard Kuehl, Bothell, Wash., Elsie (Al) Schatz, Mandan, La Verne Walth, Lodi, Calif., Marlus Reese, Napoleon, Ohio, Beatrice(Floyd) Roehrich, Mandan, and Jeanette Rudolf, Vancouver, Wash. He will also be missed by his dearest long-time friend, Florence Morgan, Spokane, Wash.; and 75 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Elmer, Arthur, Eugene and Thomas.
The family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, in lieu of flowers.
