Clifford E. Rau died April 21, 2001, in a Fargo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest April 17. He never regained consciousness.
Cliff was born to Edward and Emma Klein Rau, Sept. 9, 1931, at Ashley. He grew up and attended school in Ashley, where he was active in sports, music and the church. He married Geraldine Hoffman in Ashley on July 26, 1950. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past summer.
Cliff attended Jamestown College, graduating in 1953, with a bachelor of science degree in business education and physical education. In 1961, he received his master of arts degree in elementary and secondary school administration from Northern State College in Aberdeen, S.D. He taught business at McHenry High School from 1953-1956, and served as principal, basketball and baseball coach. In 1956, he accepted a teaching position at Hankinson, initially as a business teacher, coach and physical education instructor. He served as principal from 1957-1961, when he assumed the position of superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1990.
Cliff worked with summer youth and swimming programs. He played Legion, college and amateur baseball. He was a charter member of the Lions Club, the golf club, and Calvary Lutheran Church in Hankinson. He held district, regional and state offices in the North Dakota Association of School Administrators. In 1966, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contributions to education, his community, and his church by the Wahpeton Jaycees.
After his retirement in 1990, Cliff and Geri moved to Fargo. He worked part-time for the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and was active in Hope Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council. He helped coach his grandson's summer baseball and FM football teams. He enjoyed attending their grandchildren's athletic activities and music performances. He was also an avid Spartan, Bison and Redhawk fan.
Cliff is survived by his wife, Geri; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Keith and Debbie Rau, Fargo; his grandchildren, Nicole and Matt Rau; a brother and sister-in-law, Myron and Jerri Rau, Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, June Rau Mueller, St. Louis, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Randy.
The family prefers memorials to Hope Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley, at a later date. (Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo)
