Full Obituary: James Sherry Nist of Bethany Beach, DE, passed away Thursday, October 28th, 2010. Mr. Nist was born on January 25, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio. When he was 9, his family moved to Buffalo, NY where he was an altar boy and attended Canisius High School. His early morning stint as a delivery driver for a bakery ended spectacularly poorly for a truckload of cherry pies. His participation in New York Boys State afforded him a meeting with President Truman in the White House. Jim attended The College of Holy Cross through the ROTC program. After graduating in 1956, he served in the United States Marines. He retired to Bethany Beach after a career with IBM, which had taken his family from New York to Alabama, Virginia, Maryland, Mexico City, and back to Maryland. He had a famous sense of humor and was a horrible singer. He was a long time devotee of the VW convertible. He possessed a powerful ping-pong game, was a deadly underhand free-throw shooter, and became a late but enthusiastic convert to yoga. He loved to build and fix things particularly where a router could be employed. In addition to being a devoted friend and a loving husband and father, he spent countless hours as a counselor and true friend to strangers in the darkest hours of their lives. Through his own triumphs and tragedies, he worked hard to be a better person and share what he learned through the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. He is survived by his wife, Margy Nist of Bethany Beach, his children James, John, Sherry, Amy, Paul, and David Nist, and Megan Weigel Barrett. He also leaves behind grandchildren Josephine and Camille Rong, Phoenyx Nist-Ferrare, Claire Lyons, Nicholas and Marlie Nist, his sister Betty Harig and his brother Dr. Robert Nist. His Amazing Grace will live on in all of us. His cats, Wink and Swami, like everyone whose life he touched, will miss him dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anns Catholic Church in Bethany Beach. Friends and family may call on Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Rd, Ocean View, DE. 19970. Memorial contributions can be sent to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE. 19963 or made online at www.delawarehospice.org.
