John H. Wheeler, age 87, of Findlay passed away at the Bridge Hospice Care Center at 8:30 AM, Thursday, January 3, 2013 after a brief illness.
John was born February 8, 1925 in Emerson, Ohio, the son of the late Aaron J. and Grace M. (Hess) Wheeler. He married Betty A. Lauer in Byesville, Ohio on August 28, 1952 and she preceded him in death on March 13, 2008.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers,the Rev. Joseph G. Wheeler, and Richard W. Wheeler, Sr.
John is survived by a son John F. (Deb) Wheeler of Findlay, and one grandson, Aaron J. (fiancée Lisa Paul) Wheeler of Findlay. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his constant companion, his beagle AJ.
He retired from the University of Findlay and was granted Faculty Emeritus status. John was also a teacher and Superintendent in the Rolling Hills Local School District, Byesville, Ohio. He also taught at Chapman University, Orange, CA.
John graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1942 and West Liberty State University in 1950. He also completed graduate work at Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo.
John proudly served his country in Europe during World War II as a member of the U. S. Army. His Army unit, the 566th AAA (AW) Battalion, continues to hold annual reunions, of which he was an active part.
John was a member of numerous professional educational organizations, serving in a leadership role in many. He was also a long time member of the Symposium and the Probability Seminar.
He was a member, and affiliated Past Master of Findlay Lodge #227, Free and Accepted Masons, Findlay Chapter #58 Royal Arch Masons, Findlay Council #50 Royal & Select Masons, Findlay Commandery #49 Knights Templar, and Ohio Northern Forest # 188 Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
John was also a member of the McComb First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kirkpatrick Behenke Funeral Home, 5600 Lima Av, Findlay. Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 PM.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:30 AM, Monday, January 7, 2013 with the Rev. Janeane Hopkins officiating. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (Head and Neck Oncology), 660 Ackerman Rd., Columbus, OH, 43218-3112, or the McComb First Presbyterian Church.
