A graveside service will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home for Elma Orina Wilson, age 89, on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at 10 a.m., at Shafter Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at the Ebenezer Reformed Church, 235 James St., Shafter. Reverend Vernon Pollema will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 27, and Monday, July 28, from 10 a.m. 8 p.m., at Peters Funeral Home.
Elma was born in Lodi, California, and moved to Shafter in 1919, with her parents, F.W. and Katie Handel, who came to turn desert into productive farmland. Elma graduated with the first graduating class of Shafter High School in 1931. She graduated from Bakersfield College in 1934. She was married in 1936 to Harlin P. Wilson of the Rio Bravo area and together they enjoyed 61 happy years.
Living on their farm, Harlin and Elma raised two boys, Gary and Stanley, both of which are still farming on the family farm today. Active in the community, Elma was a longtime member of the Shafter Womens Club, Shafter Historical Society and Shafter AARP. She was active in the Richland and Shafter High School Parent Teacher Associations serving as President of the Richland PTA in 1952. She also served many years as a Pink Lady at the Kern Crest Manor Retirement Home.
Elma loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was a member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church for most of her life. She spent many years as a Sunday School Teacher and as an active member of the Reformed Church Ladies Aid Society.
Elma leaves behind sons, Gary and wife, Pat Wilson, Stanley and wife, Nancy Wilson; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; double-cousin sister Gladys Mettler; sister-in-law, Francis and husband, Milo Hall and many nephews, nieces and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Ebenezer Reformed Church or to the Westminster Theological Seminary, 1725 Bear Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA 92027.
