Bender, 75, a longtime resident of Shafter, died of polycythemia Saturday, September 24, 2005. Born October 23, 1929, in Shafter, he lived in Carlsbad for 10 years. He retired in 1989 after 26 years with Stringhams Drug Store. He worked at Bender Brothers for 14 years. He was a member of the Crossroads Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed traveling, sports, crossword puzzles and reading. Mr. Bender was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, three sisters, and a son, Dennis Bender, in 1979. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Bender of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Jack Dowden of San Diego; sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura and Mel Vaux of Shafter and Esther and Dude Ragsdale of Fresno; and granddaughter, Hailey.
