Bio: Irene E. Sage, 87, of Bismarck passed away on April 9, 2014 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday April, 14, at the Church of St. Anne at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Wayne Sattler officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 6:30 ? 8:00 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home with a vigil/ Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Irene was born on Aug. 21, 1926 to Anton and Amelia (Fisher) Koffler in Dickinson, ND. She was raised and educated in Dickinson attending St. Joseph's grade school and Dickinson Central High School. She later attended St. Alexius School of Nursing and upon graduation moved to California where she met and married George H. Sage. She continued her schooling at South Dakota State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and an M S in Nursing from Montana State University. Irene pursued a long career in nursing. She was an Instructor at the School of Practical Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson from 1959-1966 and the Director of the Associate Degree Program at Dickinson State College from 1966 ? 1970. She was appointed to the State Board of Nursing from 1968 to 1970 at which time she resigned from the Board to accept the position as the Executive Director of the State Board of Nursing and served in that position until 1978 when she fulfilled a lifelong dream of living on a tropical Island by accepting a position a Nursing instructor at the University of Guam. After realizing she loved North Dakota more than the South Pacific she returned to Bismarck to serve as the Associate Director of Nursing Education from 1980 ? 1991 at which time she retired. She was elected to the North Dakota Nurses Hall of Fame in April of 1998. For the past five years she resided at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living where she enjoyed socializing and playing cards with her friends. This last month she was a resident at St. Vincent's Care Center. In addition to playing cards she was an avid reader, enjoyed a good game of scrabble and working crossword puzzles. She loved watching her granddaughters grow up and was extremely proud of all of their accomplishments.She is survived by her son, Howard (Sue) Sage, of Bismarck, two grandchildren, Kristie and Katie Sage and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and two brothers. Memorials may be made to the God's Child Project or Bismarck Area Catholic Education Foundation. The family would like to thank the staff of Edgewood Vista and St. Vincent's Care Center for the loving care she received during her time there
