Sioux Falls ? Wilfred Schempp, age 83, passed way Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Southridge Care Center. Funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 2, 2012 at Community Reformed Church in Sioux Falls with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will be present to greet friends for visitation on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls.
Wilfred Schempp was born on October 14, 1928 in Freeman, South Dakota to Reinhold and Anna Schempp. He attended school in Freeman, graduating in 1947. After graduation Wilfred owned and operated a restaurant in Scotland, South Dakota. Wilfred later moved to Yankton, South Dakota where he worked for Red Owl. In 1950, Wilfred married Lorraine Berndt. To this union, four children were born but only one survived, Sharon Ann Schempp. Wayne, Donna, and Bonnie all passed away shortly after birth.
Wilfred later began farming in Wolf Creek, South Dakota and continued that for 11 years. Wilfred then moved to Sioux Falls where he attended Nettleton Business College, earning a degree in General and Professional Accounting. In 1963, Wilfred began driving taxi in Sioux Falls, as well as preparing taxes for private clients. While vacationing near Yellowstone National Park in 1976, Wilfred was involved in a traffic accident which left him without the use of his left arm. After the accident, Wilfred began preparing tax returns on a full time basis. In 1988, Lorraine passed away unexpectedly, and Wilfred began his own Watkins business, as well as maintaining the rental properties he owned. In 1992, Wilfred married Beatrice "Jane" Winter. They made their home in Canton, South Dakota until 1997 when Jane passed away. Wilfred returned to Sioux Falls one year later, where he cherished spending time with his daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Wilfred's passion was visiting with people, and he was known for striking up a conversation with anyone and everyone he met. He also enjoyed traveling, camping and spending weekends at his timeshare at Village West in Okoboji, Iowa. Some of his favorite memories were his trips to California, Missouri and his 1994 trip to Turkey with Jane. Wilfred was amazed by all of the biblical references he discovered there.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Sharon (Jim) Black of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren, Lisa (Louis) Winter, Jessica (Steve) Fessler, Sean (Sarah) Newcomb, Connor Black, Brandi (Dennis) Van Lenning, and Doug (Kari) Black; 14 great grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan, Garrett, Kaitlyn, Caleb, Hannah, Emily, Brooke, Ashley, Madelyn, Benjamin, Tiegen, Ryleigh and Hayden; brother, Vernon Schempp; two sisters, Leona (Alfred) Schaeffer and Verlinda (Calvin) Rempfer.
Wilfred was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine; second wife, Jane; infant children, Donna, Wayne, and Bonnie; parents, Reinhold and Anna Schempp.
