Lifelong Gackle Resident Dies
John Meidinger, 75, longtime resident of the Gackle community died late Friday afternoon, November 25, 1966, at the Wishek Community Hospital in Wishek, N.D., where he had been hospitalized for about two weeks.
He was born November 23, 1891 in South Russia, the son of Peter Meidinger and Christina Gramm Meidinger. At the age of eleven years, he came with his parents to the United States in the year 1903 where the family homesteaded on a farm six miles south of Streeter in Logan County, where he grew to manhood.
He and Katherine Just were married January 21, 1913 at a rural church north of Zeeland, N.D. They began farming six miles south of Streeter, later moving to various farms in Streeter and Gackle area. In the year 1936, they moved into Gackle where he was engaged in the harness and shoe repair business, which he continued until 1954. Following their retirement they continued to live in Gackle.
After his wife died in December 1964, he resided at the Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown for a short time, later entering the Wishek Retirement Home at Wishek, in May 1965.
Surviving are three daughters Lydia (Mrs. Walter Maas), Emma (Mrs. Francis Letcher), both of Jamestown, N.D., Bertha (Mrs. Arnold Letcher), Wishek, N.D., two sons, Theodore Meidinger, Jamestown, N.D., Peter Meidinger, Los Angeles, Calif., Twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, one brother, Jacob Meidinger, Streeter, N.D., two sisters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Wm. Stolz), Jamestown, N.D., Lydia (Mrs. Lydia Kolb), Galt, Calif.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, twelve sisters and brothers.
The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 1966 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle with Rev. John F. Mertz, pastor, officiating. The pallbearers were Duane Maas, Ray Maas, Wayne Tees, Delmer Wegner, Kenneth Klundt, and Earl Letcher. Burial was in the Gackle Cemetery. Haut Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
