John E. Kustes Jr., 65, of 1615 8th Street, Fulton, Ill., died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulton, Ill. The Rev. Father James R. Keenan, Pastor, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fulton, will officiate. The service is preceded by a 10 a.m. family prayer service at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2005, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home in Fulton, Ill. Interment will be in Calvary Hill Cemetery, Fulton, Ill. Memorials may be go to Mass offerings.
He was born July 26, 1939, in Clinton, Iowa, to John E. Kustes Sr. and Bernadette (Forman) Kustes. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County schools and a graduate of Fulton High School. He married Leah M. McKinstry on Nov. 4, 1978, in Fulton, Ill.
He was engaged in farming on the family farm; then was employed with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He returned to farming and then was employed by the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. of Sterling, Ill., retiring in 1999.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulton, Ill., and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Knights of Columbus; the Whiteside County Farm Bureau; and Future Farmers of America. He was a 4-H Leader and had served as a Cub Scout and Webelo Leader.
Survivors include his wife, Leah, Fulton; three daughters, Laura (Mrs. Chad) Hultman, Atkinson, Ill., Lana (Mrs. Joseph) Otten, Rock Island, Ill., and Kimilie (Mrs. Robert) Saiter, Clinton, Iowa; six sons, Barry (Linda) Kustes, Clinton, Iowa, Tom Kustes, Des Moines, Iowa, Christopher (Amy) Kustes, DeKalb, Ill., Andrew (Kitka) Kustes, Cordova, Ill., Keith (Tracy) Horton, Clinton, Iowa, and Michael (Marlyce) Horton, Clinton, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Robert) Pannell, Thomson, Ill., Mrs. Francis Powers, Sycamore, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Biggs, Moline, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jess and Virgil Lemmel.
